There wasn’t necessarily much room for optimism coming into South Park’s Season 20 finale. Yes, the season as a whole has been pretty great, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone don’t have a great track record when it comes to wrapping up seasons in this era of serialized South Park. And even ignoring past performance, there was simply too much ground to cover in these final 22 minutes. This finale was a decent send-off to the season, but not one that gave the many running plot threads the closure they deserved.
With that in mind, “The End of Serialization As We Know It” is probably more notable for what it didn’t include than what it did. Most surprising is the fact that the Member Berries were all but completely absent. There was that one shot of President Garrison standing before a Member Berry army in the closing moments (possibly setting up more Member Berry-related shenanigans in Season 21), but that was it. Nor did the Member Berry Godfather’s promised World War II revival really come to fruition. And not a peep from Hillary Clinton or the two Bills.
