At the rate things are going, the Legends of Tomorrow will wind up being inspiring every major myth in Western society. Already this season we’ve seen the team inspire George Lucas to create Star Wars and turn Camelot from dream to reality. Now they checked another item off the bucket list by teaming up with J.R.R. Tolkien and giving the legendary writer the inspiration for his magnum opus. But while there was plenty more historical tomfoolery to be had, the show took a decidedly darker turn this week, one that was very necessary given the impending season finale.
Things actually started off pretty swell for the team this week as they made a return to the ruins of Vanishing Point to pilfer the remaining pieces of the Spear of Destiny directly from under Reverse-Flash’s nose. That short, simple heist was not only entertaining, it was a nice reminder of how quickly and how often the balance of power can shift on this show. Part of what makes the Legion/Legends rivalry so much fun is the fact that both teams are prone to failure. This is really the first conflict in an Arrow-verse show that doesn’t involve a ragtag bunch of heroes going up against a seemingly omnipotent and unstoppable foe. The Legion are flawed, and like their opponents, they can be outplayed and outsmarted.
